The Chamber's Pangloss Poll

So Republicans have lost the House and Senate. They've lost control of at least nine critical state legislatures and six governorships, leaving the prospects of major tort reform dim indeed. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce hasn't missed a step, though.

Yesterday, I got a press release from its Institute for Legal Reform, showing the results of its new poll that suggests 85 percent of voters believe frivolous lawsuits are a serious problem. Claiming that the issue has "overwhelming bipartisan support," the chamber helpfully suggests that Democrats embrace tort reform to improve their standing with swing voters. Just to reinforce the message, the chamber is apparently running big newspaper ads with the catchy slogan--"Swing voters changed the face of Congress. Now they want America's lawsuit crisis fixed." I'm sure the Democrats will jump right on this one--right after they, say, deal with the war in Iraq, Medicare drug prices, global warming, the minimum wage, No Child Left Behind......

Considering there's no evidence that lawsuits increase the cost of insurance more than oh... 3% I wonder why this is such a big deal.
